Why does ear pain occur?
Ear pain is a common medical condition that can be caused by various factors. It is often a symptom of an underlying infection in the ear, such as otitis media, or can occur due to changes in air pressure, earwax build-up or damage to the the ear. The pain may be sharp, pulsating or throbbing and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or hearing loss. It is important to seek medical attention if earache occurs, especially if it is persistent or recurrent, to determine its exact cause and receive appropriate treatment.
Why do we suffer from ear pain and ear infections?
Ear infections, otitis, acute otitis media, are most common in children, but adults can also be affected. It often occurs in connection with a cold, i.e. a viral infection that affects the ears and nose. A cold often goes away on its own after a few days, but thebut the mucous membranes find it more difficult to defend themselves against bacterial attack. The bacteria can lead to middle ear infection, pain and otitis media.
Symptoms of otitis media?
- Ear pain, especially in small children and when they lie down.
- Feber, speciellt barn <1 år.
- Earmuffs.
- Hearing impairment.
- Older children may have poor appetite, difficulty sleeping and become irritable but do not always fever.
Sometimes the eardrum ruptures and pus flows out of the ear canal. Before this happens it usually it is usually very painful, but once the eardrum ruptures, the pain is reduced.
What is otitis media?
Ear infections are most common in children, but adults can also be affected. It often occurs in a cold and often goes away on its own after a few days. Ear infections are caused by the common cold, a viral infection that mainly affects the ears and nose. This makes it harder for the mucous membranes there to defend themselves against bacterial attack. The bacteria can then lead to infection of the middle ear and otitis media.
What happens in ear infections?
- The cornea becomes thick, red and sometimes with a scar behind it.
- It bulges outwards and becomes more difficult to move.
- The pain is due to the swelling and increased pressure in the middle ear.
- Sometimes the eardrum ruptures because the pressure is too high.
- Children are particularly vulnerable and some are often affected, most commonly at the age of 1-2 years.
- Ear infections can be hereditary.
- About 200 000 cases/year are affected by acute otitis, with a large proportion experiencing ear pain.
Who is affected by otitis media?
Ear infections mainly affect children, especially in connection with colds. Avoiding avoiding smoky environments can reduce the risk, and breastfeeding provides some protection against infections. In case of recurrence, a tube can be inserted to ventilate the middle ear and prevent new inflammations. In adults, the risk of otitis media is is significantly lower.
